A lockdown was issued Monday at Dominion Middle School in Columbus’ Clintonville neighborhood after police responded to a nearby barricade involving an individual reportedly armed with a firearm.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of East Arcadia Avenue following reports of a person with a gun who refused to leave the area. The situation prompted authorities to place the nearby school on lockdown as a precaution while officers worked to secure the scene.
Police Sgt. James Fuqua said the decision to lock down the school was made due to its close proximity to the barricade. The incident unfolded just a short distance from the school’s main entrance, raising immediate safety concerns for students and staff.
The school, located at 100 E. Arcadia Ave. within the Columbus City Schools district, sits in an area bordering Clintonville and the University District. Authorities emphasized that the lockdown was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of everyone on campus while the situation was being handled.
Monday’s incident comes just weeks after a separate safety concern at the school. In late February, staff discovered a firearm in a student’s backpack, prompting another brief lockdown. That earlier event, combined with the current police response, has heightened concerns among parents and community members about school safety.
Officials have advised families to monitor communications from Columbus City Schools and updates from police as the situation develops. As of initial reports, no information had been released regarding arrests or injuries connected to the barricade.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to manage the situation and gather more details.
